The United Nations announced that only 8% of its humanitarian appeal for Lebanon, amounting to $ 565 million, has been fulfilled.

This came in a press conference held by Stefan Dujarric, spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, on Friday, via a videoconference with journalists at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Dujarric said that he "funded our humanitarian appeal for Lebanon, amounting to $ 565 million, by 8%, with a total of $ 43 million," noting that "this amount is likely to increase as member states continue to report their contributions."

On the 14th of this month, the United Nations launched a humanitarian appeal to collect an amount of $ 565 million, in order to contribute to relief and reconstruction as a result of the Beirut port explosion.

Dujarric added, "Yesterday morning, the first shipment of 12,500 tons of wheat flour by the World Food Program was unloaded at the Beirut International Port."

"The shipment will help stabilize the prices of bread and supplies, as well as the World Food Program distributing foodstuffs to about 3,600 people," he added.

Dujarric indicated that the High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, has just concluded a 4-day visit to Lebanon, stressing the immediate support of UNHCR for more than 100,000 people severely affected by the recent explosions that occurred in the Beirut port.

On the fourth of this month, the Lebanese capital witnessed an outbreak of fire in the Beirut port, which led to a powerful explosion that shook the entire city, after the fire reached a warehouse that contained ammonium nitrate.

The explosion left more than 180 people dead, 6 thousand injured, 300 thousand homeless, and massive destruction in the Lebanese capital and billions of dollars in losses.
