The entire French political class was outraged on Saturday after denialist graffiti was discovered at the Oradour-sur-Glane Memory Center, a French martyr town and symbol of Nazi barbarism. This town would be the equivalent in France to Belchite (Zaragoza) , destroyed in the Spanish Civil War and with which it is twinned.

From French President Emmanuel Macron to Prime Minister Jean Castex, passing Jean Luc Mélenchon, leader of La Francia Insoumise (the equivalent of Podemos in France); and the far-right Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Regroup (formerly the National Front), all condemned this act of vandalism .

"Martyr people. Memory Center", reads the sign at the entrance of the center, which is visited by 300,000 people each year . From this center, which explains the context in which the massacre took place, you can access the ruins of the town.

The Limoges Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation to try to discover the author or authors of the graffiti. They crossed out the adjective "martyr" with white paint and replaced it with "liar . " "By when the truth? Reynouard is right," they wrote at the entrance of the center. The graffiti refers to Vincent Reynouard, a French denialist convicted on several occasions.

Macron on Saturday condemned this "unspeakable" act "with all firmness" and assured that "everything possible will be done so that its author or authors are brought to justice."

"Disgusted by the desecration of Oradour-sur-Glane, a people martyr to the abject barbarism of the SS Das Reich division. Neither forget nor pardon," Mélenchon wrote on Twitter. Le Pen, for his part, urged the French authorities to do everything possible to stop "the unworthy desecration" of places of memory and graves in France.

The mayor of Oradour-sur-Glane, Philippe Lacroix, was deeply affected by the discovery of the graffiti, according to France Bleu radio. "I think of the martyrs of the Oradour-sur-Glane massacre, of the women and children burned in the church, of the men shot on the farms, of the families, of those who survived, of my friend Robert Hébras, the last survivor of the massacre , "Lacroix said.

The mayor explained that it was the first time that denialist graffiti had been discovered about this massacre that took place in the town 76 years ago. Lacroix considered this act of vandalism shows that it is necessary to continue working to keep the historical memory alive.

On Saturday June 10, 1944, Oradour-sur-Glane, a town in the Limousin region, sadly entered history. That day the Waffen SS Das Reich division killed 642 civilians and destroyed the town. Among the dead were a score of Spanish Republicans who had taken refuge there.

The men were separated from the women and children, whom they took to church. "190 men shot and burned on the farms. 245 women gathered in the church, machine-gunned and burned alive . 207 children who accompanied their mothers and grandmothers, machine-gunned, burned alive (...) 642 martyrs, an entire people murdered" Macron recalled with horror when he visited the town in June 2017.

The massacre, which took place four days after the Allied landing in Normandy , was carried out apparently in retaliation for increased French resistance activity.

The town, declared a National Monument of France in 1946, was preserved in the state that remained after its destruction by the Nazis, by order of General Charles De Gaulle and became a symbol of Nazi barbarism in France.
