In March, the Ivorian president announced that he would not run for a third term, passing the baton to his Prime Minister Amadou Gon Coulibaly. But he died suddenly on July 8 from a heart attack, forcing Alassane Ouattara to return to the Ivorian presidential race.
On Saturday, the 78-year-old Ivorian president was officially invested as his party's candidate for the October presidential election.
An unconstitutional candidacy?
The announcement on August 6 of his candidacy sparked demonstrations that degenerated into violence for three days, leaving six dead, a hundred injured and 1,500 displaced. In addition, 69 people were arrested, according to an official report.
The reason ? The Constitution, revised in 2016, limits presidential terms to two. Alassane Ouattara's supporters claim that this revision has reset the mandate counter to zero, but his opponents deem a third candidacy unconstitutional.
