Today, about 500 businesses in Sweden, public and private, are certified by RFSL. Every three years, the certificate must be renewed, something about a fifth of the businesses must do this year. About a third have decided to give up, according to RFSL.

- The education sector is experiencing problems in the pandemic and so are we, says Pär Viktorsson Harrby, operations manager at RFSL.

- We are worried that fewer people will prioritize taking in LGBTQI certification. We have seen a decline among those who hire us this year compared to before.

"It costs a lot"

The hospital in Enköping is one of RFSL's customers who will not renew their certificate when it expires in 2021. Instead, they will switch to the region's own education program, something a number of municipalities and other regions have also developed.

- We came to the conclusion that it was both financially and qualitatively better to employ a person who would work with education in equal treatment, says Mikael Landsten, HR controller at Region Uppsala, who worked to develop the program.

- We wanted a broader perspective on all grounds of discrimination. Financially, it probably depends on one thing, but it depends on how many diplomas you want to do. RFSL's certification costs a lot.

BUP: Has opted out

At the child psychiatry in Örebro, they already train the staff around LGBTQI under their own auspices, as they believe that the price for a certification is too high. In addition, they hold individual training days with RFSL.

- This is an important issue. We know that LGBTQ people have described that you do not always receive a good response from the health care system, says Ylva Rosen, operations manager at BUP in Örebro.

- We counted on it. If 180 people are to be certified with us, it costs around SEK 350,000, which is almost our entire education budget. It will be very expensive.

"Have understanding"

Pär Viktorsson Harrby at RFSL is familiar with the fact that more people choose their own solutions.

- We think it is great that as many as possible get to share knowledge about LGBTQI issues. I understand that you find different solutions and that clients must prioritize.

Have you considered lowering the price?

- We do not want to reduce the requirements. It is a balancing act when we have to respond to our members. We believe it is important to have a solid process. However, we try to offer as many options as we can.
