Seville coach Julen Lopetegui finally tasted success, shed tears of joy and deserved respect and praise, after he led his team to a 3-2 win over Inter Milan in an exciting European League final to claim his first major coaching title on Friday.

Lopetegui is hugely popular as a coach for youth and youth, but he took up his position at the first level of clubs when he led the Portuguese giants Porto in 2014 and was sacked after 18 months for failing to win a title.

Lopetegui coached the Spain national team and starred in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers and already went to Russia, but was sacked a day before the start of the competition, after news leaked that he had negotiated to train Real Madrid.

Lopetegui faced a nightmare in the Spanish capital and lost the European Super Cup to Atletico Madrid, as he witnessed the 5-1 defeat by Barcelona to lose his position the next day, after only three months.

Lopetegui was very sad after this difficult period in which he saw that he had been wronged, but on Friday he cried full of emotion during the celebration in Cologne of Seville's success in defeating Inter, so that the team won the European League title, formerly known as the European Cup, for the sixth time.

"One has to understand how to deal with difficult moments and get through. These are feelings of overwhelming happiness," Lopetegui told reporters.

"I am very grateful to the players for their hard work. Our motto is that we do not give up and tonight we have proven it again," he added.

Navaz wins the title again

In addition to Lopetegui’s overwhelming feelings, Jess Navaz, who grew up in this club, was very happy to be crowned the title again, as he effectively contributed to winning the UEFA Cup in 2006 and 2007 before missing three other titles due to leaving and playing in Manchester City.

"Lopetegui works 24 hours a day, he gave us everything and brought out the best we have. He deserves everything," said Navaz, who set up the equalizer for fellow Luke de Jong against Inter Milan.

He added, "Winning the title as captain of Seville is the best thing, although we won the cup together, and we are all like the captain here."

Navas dedicated the title to his late teammates Jose Antonio Reyes, who was killed in a traffic accident last year, and Antonio Puerto, who died after suffering a heart attack on the field at the age of 22 in 2007.

Argentine Ever Banega, who spent a disappointing season with Inter Milan in 2016-2017, also passed a decisive ball and won the title for the third time as well in his last match before moving on to Saudi youth.

The final match was held without fans attending to try to contain the spread of the Corona virus, but Seville invited two season ticket holders, as the club chose them as part of its list of 25 people who are allowed to enter the stadium.

This match confirmed the exceptional love relationship between Seville and the European League, which can be summed up by a sign about this competition in the team’s dressing room in Cologne, "No one loves her the way we love her."
