Coronavirus: Spain facing a worrying resurgence of the epidemic

Spain is currently the country most affected by the coronavirus in Europe. In the past 24 hours alone, more than 8,000 new cases have been diagnosed, bringing the total to more than 380,000 cases since the start of the pandemic.

The current situation in Spain, where the Covid-19 is making a comeback, raises fears of the worst. Especially in Madrid. The capital holds the record for the number of outbreaks of contamination with 26 active outbreaks, according to the authorities. Some 25 additional deaths have also been recorded since last Thursday across the country.

This upsurge in the coronavirus has forced the head of government, Pedro Sanchez, to shorten his vacation to try to take control of a situation that seems to escape the authorities.

After a record figure of 7,000 new cases on Thursday, 8,148 people were diagnosed as carriers of Covid-19 on Friday August 21. The head of the Spanish government is back in Madrid, where he will try to reassure his fellow citizens, while a second wave seems to be emerging.

No question for the moment of restoring the state of emergency

In the capital, faced with the increase in cases, in particular in two working-class neighborhoods, the authorities are calling on residents to stay at home. There is no question for the moment of re-establishing the state of emergency. The governments of the regions are managing the pandemic.

But if by chance the curve continues to climb, it is the Spanish government that will take control. The situation is extremely worrying, especially since the start of the school year is scheduled for two weeks.

This upsurge in cases is also having an impact on drug stocks. According to the Spanish Medicines Agency, the country is almost out of Remdesivir , the only authorized antiviral drug. An alarming situation which places the country as the one which proportionally has the most cases in Europe.
