  • Health: What is West Nile fever? Symptoms and Treatment

The largest outbreak of the Nile virus that has been registered in Andalusia already affects 35 people from Coria del Río and La Puebla del Río (Seville), of which 33 are hospitalized, seven of them in the ICU, according to the latest data provided by the Ministry of Health.

The director of the Aljarafe health district, Rocío Hernández, explained at a press conference that there is no precedent for an outbreak with so many people affected in Andalusia, although there are in Romania or Greece, and added that six cases are confirmed, 19 are "probable "and ten are pending the results of the tests that have been done to them.

The average age of affected patients is 60 years , and 71% are men, Hernández said.

In this way, cases associated with the Nile virus in Andalusia have risen from 33 to 35 in one day, and the number of people admitted to hospitals has also increased , from 26 to 33, although hospital discharges are expected today, the spokesperson added. of this outbreak.

People in the ICU for this disease, whose first cases occurred on August 5, have dropped from eight to seven in one day.

Hernández has attributed the increase in cases this year to abundant spring rains and high temperatures, which has caused the population of the local mosquito , which is the one that causes the infection and not an insect from other countries, increases this 30% year over the annual average.

In addition, he highlighted that Coria and La Puebla are in a wetland area , with the marshes and the Guadalquivir river, and in a transit area for migratory birds, which are those that have the virus that mosquitoes later transmit to humans.

The council does not have a date for possible control of this outbreak, and the health official has said that she would "like" to say that in fifteen days it will be controlled, although she cannot do it, and has asked the population to protect themselves from bites because "The mosquitoes can be seen. I hope the same will happen with the coronavirus," he pointed out.

To control the outbreak, the Junta de Andalucía has authorized the fumigation of all areas that are linked to the procreation of the mosquito that transmits the Nile virus.

The West Nile virus is a disease that is transmitted to people by mosquito bites and can also affect birds, horses, and other mammals.

Around 80% of infected people, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), do not experience symptoms , while the remaining 20% do manifest symptoms and their most serious diagnosis leads to encephalitis or meningitis, which can lead to brain damage and death.
