Tawam Hospital removes a giant tumor from a patient in her fifties

The neurosurgery team at Tawam Hospital “one of the facilities of the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company - SEHA” removed a meningioma from the brain of a 52-year-old patient from a sister Gulf state. The patient was suffering from severe headache and imbalance in addition to severe vision deterioration. The patient went to Tawam Hospital for the availability of expertise and high-level medical equipment.

Dr. Muhammad Al-Asha, a consultant brain tumor and skull base surgeon, said that the tumor volume is equivalent to 600 ml, which is nearly half the normal brain volume in humans, which is 1400 ml, and this type of benign brain tumor is the most common among people and affects women to a higher degree than men. Al-Asha also added that the operation was of a high degree of complexity due to the tumor's engagement with the main venous sinuses in the brain (Transverse Sinus), which required 6 hours of microscopic microsurgery to remove the tumor radically and completely restore the venous sinus.

It should be noted that the size of this tumor (12 cm in its largest diameter) is one of the largest sizes of tumors confined to the skull that have been dealt with globally (14.5 cm according to some scientific reports), and it is perhaps the largest of this type of tumor that has been reported at the level of UAE.
