A train traveled 7 km without its driver on Wednesday in northern Italy. It eventually derailed, injuring three people, including the only passenger on the train, according to Italian media.
The accident happened shortly before noon at Carnate Usmate station, northeast of Milan. The conductor got off to take a break with the controller and the train left without him.

An open investigation
The regional railway company Trenord admitted that, for "reasons not yet clarified", the train had left the station "without any personnel on board". The security system then directed the train to a section of unused track.

The train eventually derailed, injuring three people in total. Television footage shows a wagon leaning on its side, and another at a 45 degree angle to the track. The prosecution opened an investigation.
