In a month, the United States will restore all previous sanctions against Iran, including those related to uranium enrichment activities. This was announced by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Fox News.

“(The action of the sanctions. - RT ) was temporarily suspended due to the ridiculous nuclear deal. The world will become safer. The Iranians will not have the opportunity to acquire Russian air defense systems, Chinese tanks - all that creates risks and instability in the Middle East. All the countries of the Persian Gulf, as well as Israel in this regard, are full of enthusiasm. As a result, the risk to them will be reduced and the Americans will also be safer, ”Pompeo said.

At the same time, the secretary of state threatened Moscow and Beijing if they interfere with the process of restoring UN sanctions against Iran.

“We have already acted in a similar way. Whenever a country violated the existing sanctions imposed by America, we invariably held it accountable for it. We will do the same with regard to the expanded sanctions adopted by the UN Security Council, ”he added.

The press service of the State Department also published a press release, from which it follows that on August 20-21, Pompeo will visit the UN headquarters, where he will notify the members of the Security Council of the return of anti-Iranian restrictions in 30 days, and will also meet with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. Washington intends to extend the embargo on arms supplies to Iran for 13 years, despite the fact that the corresponding resolution was not supported by the members of the Security Council (the United States and the Dominican Republic voted for, Russia and China against, 11 countries abstained).

Earlier, the head of the White House, Donald Trump, spoke of his intention to launch a mechanism to restore sanctions against Tehran.

“Two years ago, I pulled the United States out of the disastrous Iranian nuclear deal, which was the product of the failed foreign policy of the Obama and Biden administration,” he stressed.

A Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPOA, also known as the Iranian Nuclear Deal) was agreed in July 2015 by representatives from Iran, Russia, the United States, China, Britain, France and Germany. Under the terms of the deal, Tehran renounced its own nuclear program in exchange for lifting all existing UN Security Council sanctions, a number of unilateral US sanctions and all restrictive measures by the EU.

In May 2018, Donald Trump announced the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal, accusing Iran of violating its terms. No evidence of this was presented, but this did not prevent the United States from reinstating anti-Iranian sanctions. Tehran, in turn, step by step reduced the implementation of its obligations under the JCPOA, each time before the next stage, giving the European parties to the agreement the opportunity to continue the implementation of the nuclear deal.

Note that the arms embargo is also part of the JCPOA. Iran has the right to purchase weapons only with the permission of the Security Council. This measure is valid until October 18. As Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted, this provision was included in the JCPOA as a gesture of goodwill on the part of Iran as part of a package that "has nothing to do with the Iranian nuclear program." According to Iranian Ambassador to the Russian Federation Kazem Jalali, the extension of the embargo will "state the death of the JCPOA."

"The US has overdone its sanctions"

The US secretary of state is doing the wrong thing, threatening sanctions on Russia and China, which support Iran's aspirations in building normal relations with the world community. This opinion was expressed by the first deputy chairman of the Federation Council committee on international affairs Vladimir Dzhabarov.

“I think that Russia and China are not the countries that can be threatened as much as Mr. Pompeo threatens. It seems to me that he slightly overestimates the significance of these sanctions for such powers as China and Russia ... Iran is developing and is ready to meet halfway. The desire to work normally on nuclear issues with many countries is clearly expressed by the Iranians. But Americans are deaf to this. I think they overdid it with their sanctions. Even the United States is not allowed to talk in such a tone with Russia and China, "said the interlocutor of RT.

In turn, HSE professor Alexander Domrin recalled that during the recent vote to extend the arms embargo, the United States did not receive support for its resolution from its European allies.

“Now Pompeo is going to the Security Council only to inform that the United States is imposing sanctions unilaterally. This is the position. Of course, I am very critical of Barack Obama's foreign policy. But one of the positive elements of this policy is that there was a certain normalization of relations with Iran. A consortium of several countries was created to start a civilized dialogue with Iran and not constantly threaten it with a club. The fact that Trump did not continue this policy seems to me to be his mistake, "the expert explained in a conversation with RT.
