The Prosecutor General's Office of Belarus opened a criminal case on the seizure of power on the fact of the creation of a coordination council by the opposition.

“The creation and activities of the coordinating council are aimed at seizing state power, as well as harming the national security of the Republic of Belarus,” Prosecutor General Alexander Konyuk quotes Sputnik Belarus.

Recall that after the presidential elections in Belarus, the winner of which was the current head of state Alexander Lukashenko, riots began in the republic. The demonstrators demanded Lukashenka's resignation from the presidency.

Against the background of these events, representatives of the Belarusian opposition formed a coordination council, which calls for "new elections according to international standards with a new composition of all commissions." The elections held in the republic are proposed to be declared invalid.

Alexander Lukashenko, in turn, said that presidential elections have already been held in the country and there will be no others. However, later that day, Lukashenka allowed new presidential elections in the republic after the adoption of a new constitution.

At the same time, the Belarusian oppositionists themselves continue to assert that they intend to seek new elections for the head of state. At the same time, Lukashenko's opponents will not object if the current president wants to participate in them.

“We proceed from the premise that every citizen of Belarus should have the right to participate in elections, there should be no obstacles here. But we do not believe that Lukashenka will agree to this, ”said Maria Kolesnikova, a member of the Presidium of the Coordination Council. She is quoted by Interfax.

State Secretary of the Security Council of the republic Andrei Ravkov, in turn, compared the current processes in the republic with the August 1991 coup, when an attempted coup d'etat was undertaken.

He noted that 29 years ago, "the anti-constitutional actions of the self-proclaimed State Committee for a State of Emergency deepened the chaos in society, bringing closer the collapse of the once mighty state."

“Similar processes are taking place today in Belarus. Trying to disturb the peace and tranquility in our home, people are called for rallies and strikes, which will only weaken the economy of our country, "Ravkov wrote on Facebook.

According to him, the organizers of the protests can destroy everything that the Belarusians "have achieved by hard and everyday work."

In addition, the head of the Ministry of Defense of Belarus Viktor Khrenin announced interference in the internal affairs of the country.

“We see that today there is interference in the internal affairs of our state. We receive information from various sources, which cannot but worry us. We forecast the development of various options, ”he said.

Russia also said that the situation in Belarus indicates direct and indirect external interference in the affairs of the republic. This was stated by the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov.

“I will not specify these forces, these countries. But we state that there is indirect and even direct interference. We are concerned in this regard and we repeat once again, we are convinced that the problems in Belarus should be resolved by the Belarusians themselves through dialogue, remaining in the legal field, ”Peskov said.

According to him, the Kremlin believes that a dialogue between Moscow and the Belarusian opposition would become interference in the country's internal affairs.

“The Belarusian authorities should identify and name the internal Belarusian problems in a dialogue with representatives of those who are protesting. And we would not interfere with this protest in any way now, especially now, at the hottest stage, ”Peskov said.

Earlier, EU officials said that the union does not recognize the results of the presidential elections held in Belarus. Along with this, the EU announced its intentions to impose sanctions against "a significant number of those responsible for the violence in the republic and electoral fraud."

On Thursday, August 20, Vladimir Putin had a conversation with European Commission President Charles Michel. The European politician informed the Russian leader about the results of the extraordinary summit of the European Union, at which a decision was made on sanctions against a number of Belarusian representatives.

In a conversation with Michel, Putin pointed out "the counterproductiveness of exerting any pressure on the leadership of the sovereign Belarusian state and outside interference in the internal processes taking place there."

The Kremlin's statement following the results of the conversation says that the soonest normalization of the situation in Belarus is in the interests of both Russia and the European Union.
