According to RIA Novosti, the head of the European Council announced this following an extraordinary summit of EU leaders.

He also said that the EU will study the possibility of imposing sanctions against the Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko.

Michel added that sanctions on the situation in Belarus will be introduced soon.

He said that the European Union does not recognize the results of the presidential elections in Belarus.

“We urge the authorities of Belarus to find a peaceful way out of the crisis,” said the head of the European Council.

On August 14, the final results of the presidential elections in Belarus were published, according to which the incumbent leader Alexander Lukashenko won with 80.1% of voters. Opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya has 10.1% of the vote.
