The announcement was made on Wednesday after the Council of Europe convened in a digital summit on action against Belarus and the outcome of the 9 August presidential election.

"The EU will soon impose sanctions on a significant number of individuals behind the violence, repression and electoral fraud," said EU Michel Permanent Council President Charles Michel following an extraordinary digital summit.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven states that there was great agreement among EU leaders, according to TT.

"I and my EU colleagues condemn the actions of the Belarusian regime following the presidential election on 9 August," the Prime Minister said in a statement, continuing:

"The election was neither free nor fair and the EU condemns the electoral fraud, threats, violence and illegal arrests of peaceful protesters," said Prime Minister Stefan Löfven in a statement following the EU digital summit on Belarus.
