On June 17, the issue of Västerås Airport was sent back from the City Council to the Municipal Board, after long discussions ended in a re-referral.

The case was referred back to be supplemented on the basis of 15 demands from the Moderates, who said that the issue of Västerås airport was not sufficiently investigated at the time. They also demanded an investigation into the consequences of the closure and that the proposal from outside actors to automate and modernize the airport be looked at more closely.

The Moderates received support from the Christian Democrats, the Sweden Democrats and the Center Party.

A new decision has now been made

On Wednesday, the matter was again on the municipal board's table, and once again a decision was made that the airport should be closed - despite the further investigation made into the Moderates' 15 issues.

Do you now think that the issue of Västerås Airport is more investigated now than it was earlier this summer?

- Unfortunately not. It has still not sent a formal request to Region Västmanland for co-financing or co-ownership, but it still refers to a contact that was in January. Since he has not investigated the track when it comes to 5G and the digital airport, says Elisabeth Unell (M), opposition councilor.

- I would say that there is still an enormous amount of data that needs to be produced.

Teljebäck (S): Good surface

The Social Democrats, the Liberals, the Green Party and the Left Party want to close Västerås Airport with reference to the fact that it is losing SEK 23 million (2019) and that the forecast for the future does not look better. It is not seen that the airport in 2025 will be able to be operated on commercial grounds, which is the requirement.

In September 2017, it was decided in the City Council that Nya Västerås Flygplats B AB would not be allowed to incur a loss of more than SEK 20 million in 2019, and that the result from 2021 would not be allowed to be worse than minus 15 million.

- We believe that we have a good basis for making decisions on. We thought we could have made a decision already in June, but then the opposition wanted to take a closer look at certain issues and we have done so now. We believe that we have sufficient evidence to make a decision on 3 September, says Anders Teljebäck (S), chairman of the municipal board.

A decision on the closure of Västerås Airport is now expected to be made on 3 September in the City Council.
