Egypt: Termination of the mandate of the head of a neighborhood who threw a fig seller to the ground

Egyptian Minister of Housing Amin Ghoneim ended the mandate of the head of the Fifth Settlement district, and returned her to her job in sanitation, after throwing the fruit of a prickly pear seller on the ground and dealing with the seller sharply, which sparked widespread dissatisfaction in the Egyptian street and on social media pages.

Asmat was heading the campaign to remove occupations in the Fifth Settlement and encountered the presence of the seller, Izzat Abdel Hakam, with a fig on its way, so she ordered the winch of the campaign to move to lift the carriage with its contents. But she insisted on her stance, and she carried a shovel by herself and kept packing the prickly pears and throwing them on the ground as she addressed the seller with sharp words.

The fig seller said in a video posted on YouTube that he has been working as a street vendor of fruit for 20 years, and that he has been waiting for the prickly pear season every year, and he lost his livelihood after what happened, and he did not sleep the whole night after the accident due to the insult he was subjected to. ».

A person who appeared with Ezzat in the video said, "He is a street vendor of prickly pears as well, like Izzat. He has five children, including a high school student and an engineering student. They work in a difficult profession and deal with thorns that bloom their hands every day, and all they ask for is protection."

Journalist Wael Al-Abrashi said in his coverage of the incident that "the prickly pear seller who was exposed to the situation is a person seeking his livelihood, and that besides our belief in the necessity of implementing the law, we must take into account human and social standards."

Al-Ibrashi added, "We have to remember - with a big difference - that Bouazizi's accident was the result of a similar accident in which an employee crossed her borders."

The Egyptian Ministry of Housing issued a press statement, confirming the cancellation of the mandate of the neighborhood president in response to the street reaction.

The statement said, "There is a difference between the application of the law and the arbitrariness of its application, and that the official must take all legal measures against violations and occupations without abuse or abuse of power."
