Data from Spain
Coronavirus infections in Spain continue to grow. In the last 24 hours, the Spanish Ministry of Health has reported 3,715 new cases, a daily record since the suspension of the lockdown at the end of June. The capital region, Madrid, with 1,535 new cases, is footing the biggest bill, followed by the Basque Country and Aragon with 470 cases each. Also in the last 24 hours 14 people died, less than 21 the previous day. In the past seven days, the virus has claimed 131 lives. Total cases, including those of patients who have developed antibodies and may already be cured, are 370,876. Despite the obligation to wear a protective mask in all regions of the country, Spain has the highest number of cases in all of Western Europe and the highest incidence of positives per 100,000 people in the last 14 days. In difficulty in keeping the spread of the coronavirus under control, regional authorities have begun to impose restrictions on nightlife and the use of public transport, all measures that had been lifted in recent weeks as new cases had dwindled. The health authorities have attributed the rise in infections to the increase in tests carried out and have repeatedly reiterated that the country is not affected by a second wave of the pandemic.
