A Russian general was killed and 3 soldiers were wounded yesterday, Tuesday, in a bomb explosion on the road to a Russian military convoy near the city of Deir Ezzor, eastern Syria, according to Russian news agencies quoting the Ministry of Defense.

The ministry said that the device exploded while a Russian convoy was returning after a "humanitarian operation" near the city of Deir Ezzor. The statement did not give further details.

The Russian military intervention in 2015 contributed to President Bashar al-Assad remaining in power, and the start of a major process to regain territory controlled by the opposition in the early stages of the war.

A joint Turkish-Russian patrol was hit by an explosion in the Idlib region in northwestern Syria on Monday, without causing any casualties in its ranks.

Last July, 3 Russian soldiers and several Turkish soldiers were wounded in Idlib Governorate, when a joint military patrol was hit by an improvised explosive device.
