On Tuesday, Lebanese President Michel Aoun strongly denied that the Beirut port explosion, which occurred on the fourth of this month, was caused by Hezbollah's weapons, while the authorities to investigate the explosion issued an arrest warrant for the port's general director.

The Lebanese president said - in an interview with the Italian newspaper, "Corriere della Sera" - that there are many stories being circulated, considering that Hezbollah does not need to store its weapons in the port, and that the hypothesis that links the explosion to the party's weapons that were stored in the port of Beirut is an "impossible hypothesis."

The Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, denied a few days ago that his group had stored weapons in the port, adding that the party would await the results of the investigation, "but if it becomes clear that the explosion was an act of sabotage committed by Israel, it will pay a fair price."

President Aoun added that the ongoing investigations will reveal all matters and determine the responsibilities, stressing that no possibility has been dropped, such as the hypothesis that the explosion occurred "due to the lack of caution of those involved in the port," adding that ammonium nitrate has been present in the port since 2014.

Aircraft hypothesis

The Lebanese President said that many people spoke of seeing planes pass in the sky over the port just before the explosion, and although this talk was "not very reliable," it must be heard.

And the explosion of 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate, which was stored in the port of Beirut, left more than 170 people dead, 6 thousand injured, and massive destruction in the neighborhoods of the Lebanese capital.

President Aoun explained that the investigation is closed, and that the Judicial Council is handling the matter, and it is concerned with looking into important cases.

In a related context, Fadi Sawan, the judicial investigator in the Beirut bombing, issued - today, Tuesday - an arrest warrant in front of (my presence) against the director general of the port, Hassan Quraytem, and the judicial investigator had questioned the current director general of customs Badri Daher yesterday, and issued a warrant for his arrest.

The Lebanese Al-Akhbar newspaper revealed that Dahir told the judicial investigator that the ammonium nitrate entered the port with the approval of the international peace-keeping forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL), while these forces denied that they had anything to do with the matter.

Judicial investigations

The Lebanese authorities have so far arrested 21 officials and employees in connection with the Beirut port bombing, most notably the Director General of Customs.
