For more than 40 years, coordinated ecological governance and improvement of people's livelihood

The afforestation area of the Three North Project exceeds 30 million hectares

Beijing, August 17 (Reporters Gu Zhongyang, Kou Jiangze) The reporter learned from the State Forestry and Grassland Administration that the fifth phase of the construction of the Three North Shelterbelt System is about to be completed. The Three North Project is the first national-level key forestry ecological project implemented in my country. In the past 40 years, a total of 30.14 million hectares of afforestation has been preserved, and the forest coverage rate in the project area has increased from 5.05% to 13.57%.

According to reports, the Three North Project has always put the restoration of green water and green mountains as the primary task, large-scale afforestation and grass planting, and continuous restoration of the natural ecology. A total of 7.882 million hectares of windbreak and sand-fixing forests have been built, 336,000 square kilometers of desertified land have been treated, and more than 10 million hectares of grasslands and pastures with severe desertification and salinization have been protected and restored. The national desertification and desertification monitoring results show that since 2014, the area of desertified land in the project area has been continuously reduced, and the average annual number of sandstorm days has dropped from 6.8 days to 2.4 days. Among them, the three major sandy lands of Mu Us, Horqin and Hulun Buir have been initially controlled, and the area of desertified land has continued Net reduction. A total of 11.94 million hectares of soil and water conservation forests have been built, and the area of soil erosion control has been 447,000 square kilometers, and the annual sediment inflow into the Yellow River has been reduced by about 400 million tons. A total of 1.656 million hectares of farmland protection forests have been built, and 30.194 million hectares of farmland have been effectively sheltered. The protective effect has increased the annual grain output of the project area by 10.6 million tons.

The Three North Project insists on the overall promotion of ecological governance and improvement of people's livelihood, and strives to build an eco-economic shelter forest system. For more than 40 years, the timber forest in the project area has been converted into timber reserves of 1.83 billion cubic meters, with an economic value of 913 billion yuan. A total of 4.63 million hectares of economic forests have been established, with an annual output of 48 million tons of dried and fresh fruits, and 15 million people have achieved stable poverty alleviation by relying on characteristic forest and fruit industries. The project area receives 380 million tourists annually, and the direct tourism income is 48 billion yuan.

According to the person in charge of the National Forestry and Grass Administration, the Three North Project during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period and the sixth phase of the project will coordinate the promotion of the management of landscape, forest, field, lake and grass system. Increase the ecological protection and restoration of the four major sandy lands in Hulunbuir, Horqin, Hunshandake, and Maowusu, and important sand source areas such as the Hexi Corridor, Alashan Plateau, and the periphery of Xinjiang Oasis, and strive to achieve the cure of desertified land in key areas; Strengthen the control of soil erosion in important water conservation areas such as the Northeast hills, Yanshan Mountains, the Loess Plateau, Altay, Tianshan, etc.; accelerate the optimization and upgrading of agricultural protection forests in the Northeast Plain, North China Plain, Fenwei Plain, Hetao Plain, Xinjiang Oasis and other agricultural areas; Build a number of characteristic forest and fruit industry belts in Xinjiang oasis, Loess Plateau, Yanshan Mountains and other places to expand green industries that enrich the people. Through continuous efforts, we will continuously improve the total amount and quality of forest and grass resources, further improve the ecological environment of the Three Norths, and consolidate and develop the green ecological barriers in the northern borders of the motherland.
