Inmates and workers of the El Palo nursing home in Malaga are being treated after detecting an outbreak of scabies that has forced to follow the evolution and medicate approximately fifteen people. Sources from the Junta de Andalucía, on whom the center depends, explain that there are currently six confirmed cases, but that there are more people who are under control after having been in contact with those diagnosed.

As EL MUNDO has learned, all those affected are being treated by the health services of the center , which at the end of last week realized the magnitude of the outbreak when they saw how the possible infections were happening.

The Andalusian Executive has confirmed a total of six positives , which are "in treatment and with the Health protocol applied." However, the number of inmates and workers who are being medicated is higher and would range between 15 and 20 , according to other sources. These people are "roommates and contact personnel" of confirmed cases and to whom "the same preventive treatment is applied."

Scabies is a skin disease that is very contagious . Caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite , it manifests itself in the form of very itchy rashes. Its effects can last for weeks after starting treatment, which is usually the application of an antiparasitic cream.

The sources consulted indicated that the patients are being treated with Sarcop and criticized that those responsible for the center have not taken measures to prevent infections when the first case was detected. " If this were the Covid-19 , I do not know what would be of us," said a person linked to the residence, who criticized an alleged lack of means of protection that he considers to have been another key factor in the spread of the disease. "We do not have protective gowns and we have to improvise," he complained, adding that "they cannot say that this is something new for those responsible for the residence."

And it is not the first time that workers and unions have reported an outbreak of scabies in this center. In March of last year it turned out that "at least two workers and two inmates" had been infected, a circumstance that CSIF reported to the Labor Inspectorate .

The aforementioned organization criticized the "obscurantism" of the center's management regarding this matter, reproaching the staff and relatives of the inmates for not being informed. A complaint that is repeated on this occasion, according to the sources consulted by this newspaper, which explained that a worker has been on leave since Saturday and that among the staff there is a fear of being able to infect their relatives.

" They do not communicate anything to us ," they affirmed, adding that the family of an elderly man who had obtained a place in the center has resigned due to the rumors that spread about the spread of the disease. "A resident complained the other day that she could not bear the itching," they added as an example.

Regardless of the health situation of the inmates and the staff, the question raised by the sources consulted is what is the origin of these outbreaks that are reproduced over time, for which they demanded that the Autonomous Administration adopt the necessary measures to Dont do it again. "If it has been by someone infected who has come to the center, an inmate, a relative or the animals that may be in the surroundings, you have to disinfect and end the source of infection so that it does not spread."
