More than 70 former senior Spanish political officials of the PSOE, the PP and the UCD have signed a manifesto in defense of the reign of Juan Carlos I in which "due respect for the presumption of innocence" of the monarch is claimed as the main point.

The document, made public this Tuesday, has a wide list of signatories, among which the former vice presidents of the Government Alfonso Guerra and Rodolfo Martín Villa ; the former minister and former president of the Community of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre; the former president of the Senate, Juan José Laborda , or various former ministers, such as Celestino Corbacho , Cristina Alberdi , Ignacio Bayón , Soledad Becerril , Pío Cabanillas or Ana Pastor, Jaime Mayor Oreja or Josep Piqué , among others.

"If their actions could be worthy of disapproval, the courts of justice will decide," clarify the signatories of the text, who consider the reign of Juan Carlos I as "the most fruitful historical stage that Spain has known since, at least, the beginning of the XIX century".

The promoters of the letter recall that the monarch "promised to be the King of all Spaniards and soon a Spain without exiles was achieved." Also that the model of the Transition was "at the same time admired and imitated internationally" and that it was "correct" to qualify it as a "motor of change".

They ask for the defense of the last 40 years

In relation to his career during his reign, the statement insists that Juan Carlos I "has been invariably faithful to his democratizing purposes and to the responsibilities derived from the institutional framework", and that the failed coup of 23-F is proof of this. .

"The defense of the legacy of King Juan Carlos I cannot be equated with the protection of a certain system of government but must be situated in the global meaning of the 1978 Constitution", claim the signatories.

Through this perspective, they emphasize, the period in which the monarch was head of state -between 1975 and 2014- is "fundamental" to understand "the immediate past" of Spain, but also "the possibilities of its better future."

For this reason, the text ends with the request that Spain and its institutions defend "the good name of the people who have made possible these last and satisfactory 40 years of common history", because "the very quality of our future "as a country.
