18 August 2020 The Covid-19 pandemic in the world has entered a new phase, in which it is driven by infections in young people under 40 and with a greater risk for the most vulnerable groups. Takeshi Kasai, director of the Western Pacific office of the World Health Organization (WHO) said this at a press conference.

"The epidemic is changing - he said - and people aged 20, 30, 40 are increasingly driving the spread. Many do not know they are infected and this increases the risk of contagion for the most vulnerable". The observation on the age of the infected also applies to Italy, as confirmed by the latest ISS report, referring to the week until 11 August, which recorded a median age of new cases of around 34 years.

According to the WHO bulletin from the beginning of the epidemic to August 16, there have been 21.2 million confirmed cases of Covid-19, with 761,000 deaths. Leading the increase seen in the last week are Southeast Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean, while in Europe and America the increase in cases is essentially stable. On the other hand, infections in Africa fell by 27% compared to the previous week.
