US President Donald Trump has harshly criticized his Democratic rival in the upcoming presidential election, Joe Biden, and said he could not stand up to seasoned world leaders like Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In light of intense competition with the approaching elections scheduled for next November, Trump described his rival as "worn out", during his participation by phone in a program on "Fox News" channel.

"You deal with very smart people (on the international stage). You deal with world-class chess players among the leaders of these countries. I know them all and deal well with them all, like Erdogan, the president of Turkey," the US president said.

Trump believed that his Democratic opponent was not qualified to deal with such leaders because he "feared leaving his basement," as he put it.

He said that his biggest opponent is not Biden and not the Democrats in general, but what he described as corrupt media.

Trump's comments came a day after the Turkish presidency and political circles in Ankara denounced Biden's statements regarding support for the Turkish opposition to topple Erdogan.

Biden made the remarks in an interview filmed by the New York Times last December, but the video was not published until Saturday, and was widely shared on social media.

When Biden was asked about Erdogan, he described him as "an autocrat", criticized his policy towards the Kurds, and urged support for the Turkish opposition.

He added that Erdogan “must pay a price,” and that Washington should enthusiastic the leaders of the Turkish opposition “so that they can confront and defeat Erdogan. Not through a coup, not through a coup, but through the electoral process.”
