- It is usually not so much at this time. It is not the case that it is extreme, but it is a little more than it usually is, says marine biologist Ulf Lindahl at the County Administrative Board in Blekinge.

The algae bloom is linked to the weather, which means that it has also reached Blekinge after the recent heat wave.

- If it is warm, sunny and windless, there will usually be algae blooms. Then these algae accumulate on the surface and benefit from it.

Do not swallow the water

He says that there are both toxic and harmless algae and that you yourself should keep track of the current information via your municipality's website. What the forecast looks like in the future is difficult to say, but it looks like it will be a continuation.

- In general, you can say that if SMHI promises warm, sunny and quiet, you can suspect that the algae bloom will continue, says Ulf Lindahl.

What is your recommendation for bathers who see this in the water?

- It can be toxic, but it does not have to be toxic. I would say that as long as you do not ingest this and swallow it, there is no major danger. Above all, children and dogs should be careful.

At the Baltic Sea Information Center, you can find current information about the situation for algal blooms in the county. Via each municipality's website, you can also see which specific bathing places are affected.
