According to statistics from the Swedish Transport Agency, traffic mortality during the first seven months of 2020 was much lower than usual. 114 people died in traffic between January and July.

- It's a record. Because in seven months we have never had such low numbers, says Khabat Amin, statistician at the Swedish Transport Agency to SVT.

Even in July this year, a record number of people died in traffic. According to preliminary figures, 18 people died in road traffic, a less than the same period last year 2019.

"Have we never had before"

- We have never had exactly 18 fatalities in traffic before. Precisely these summer months, there are usually very many who die in traffic, says Khabat Amin and continues.

- This is the second year in a row that we have such a low mortality rate in traffic during the month of July. We have a certain reduction if you compare with 2018 or 2017.

Khabat Amin points out, however, that the information so far is preliminary, one or two may be added or one or two may disappear.

Reduced traffic flow is due to the pandemic

According to Amin, it is too early to make an analysis of why there are so few. The Swedish Transport Agency usually makes deeper analyzes in February / March the following year.

- It requires a lot of data to retrieve from other sources. But what we are seeing at this time is that the flow of traffic has decreased, and that is due to the pandemic. But how much of this reduction will be due to the pandemic, it is difficult to say.
