The Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe , has made a visit to a Tokyo hospital on Monday for a medical check-up, which has triggered speculation about an alleged deterioration of the Japanese president's health.

Abe's official car was captured by local media cameras during his arrival at Keio University Hospital today , a visit that was due to "a regular medical inspection" that the leader undergoes during his vacation, according to a Secretary of his Cabinet to the Japanese state channel NHK.

This news came the day after former Economy Minister Akira Amari , considered very close to Abe, stated on a local television program that the prime minister needed to rest.

The Japanese media report that Abe has suffered a recent health problem and that he had already undergone another medical check-up in mid-June, and point out that in the last two months the prime minister has limited his public appearances to events to commemorate the 75 years after the end of World War II .

The 65-year-old conservative politician has served as prime minister since 2012, although he previously led the Japanese executive during a short one-year term, which he abruptly ended in 2007 due to a pathology of the digestive system.

Abe became Japan's longest-serving prime minister in office last November, and his current term could be extended until September 2021, according to his party's internal regulations.
