On Sunday, August 16, for the first time since the elections, a mass rally in support of the President of Belarus took place. Alexander Lukashenko appealed to supporters at the Government House, thanked them for their support and said that he was ready "to kneel before them." Lukashenko also stressed that, first of all, the participants in the counter-protest support not himself, but Belarus as a whole. Until that moment, opposition supporters gathered in the streets for a week. The protests engulfed all major cities of the country and even escalated into riots, which resulted in mass detentions and injuries among the demonstrators.
