The two islands of the Maldives have been declared protected reserves.

A victory for the Save Maldives group of environmentalists who fought against the government to save a corner of paradise. The news comes from the BBC.

"We are very active on social media and have a very young population," explained Adam Isham, one of the environmentalists.

Despite tourism being one of the archipelago's main economic resources, activists argued that the construction of a new resort would not only damage the coral reef and the ecosystem in general, but would also cause it to lose revenue and jobs.

"Many inhabitants depend on these islands, some are coconut growers and gatherers or carpet weavers," said Adam Isham.

The government therefore decided to declare the two islands protected marine reserves.
