• Somalia: Mogadishu runs out of safe hotels

Armed men have broken into a hotel in Mogadishu this Sunday after the explosion of a car bomb , as reported by the Somali police to the Afp agency. At least 28 people have been injured in the deflagration, as confirmed by the head of the emergency service to Reuters.

According to Reuters, an explosion took place at the Elite hotel, on the Lido beach of the Somali capital. An exchange of fire followed. "I have heard a big explosion in the hotel, followed by a shooting and clouds of smoke," said Ahmed Ali, a witness.

The Somali state agency Sonna has reported that the Islamist group Al Shabab has attacked the hotel entrance with a car bomb and armed militiamen. This 'modus operandi' has already been used on other occasions, in similar attacks, by Al Shabab.

"There was a car bomb explosion that targeted the Elite hotel, located on the Lido beach," and "many shots were fired inside the hotel," explained Adan Ibrahim, a police officer in the area.

Somali police spokesman Sadik Ali confirmed to Reuters the explosion at the hotel, frequented by government officials and Somalis from the diaspora. The Government has deployed security forces in the area .

"The exchange of shots is terrible and the bullets have hit us near the beach," Mohamed Nur, an official, told Reuters.

Somalia has suffered from endemic violence since 1991, when clans of warlords overthrew President Siad Barre and then clashed with each other. Since 2008, the Islamist organization Al Shabab has been fighting against the central government recognized by the international community.
