Barcelona's exit from the European Champions League with a historic 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich has raised many questions about the club's future and the viability of the old guard remaining in the team that lost all the championships this season.

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique called for a change in Camp Nou. With most of the team’s stars getting older, the big players are accused, and Pique himself said, "No one is indispensable."

The Spanish newspaper "MARCA" asked about the likelihood of the departure of the elderly players over the age of 30 from the Catalan team this summer? Especially since 6 of them participated in the historic defeat against Bayern Munich. The newspaper reviewed their names and the extent of their contracts with the team, and they are:

Gerard Pique, 33,
after 12 years at the club, is still Barcelona's best defender this season, playing 45 games. And there are two years left since the player's contract at Camp Nou expires, and there is a penalty clause of half a billion euros.

Lionel Messi (33 years)
is the Argentine star the best player in Barcelona this season, and despite losing the local titles, he won - as usual - the league's top scorer title, and generally scored 31 goals in 44 games this season. His contract expires next summer, and his penalty clause amounts to 700 million euros.

Messi is the only old guard who wants Barcelona to renew his contract, but this has become in doubt in recent times after the team collapsed and lost all the titles he competed for.

Luis Suarez (33 years old)
won many games for Barcelona when he was physically and artistically fit, but his multiple injuries last season missed him from the stadiums for a long time, and kept him from his high level.

The Uruguayan striker's contract expires next summer, but it will be automatically extended for another year if he plays 60% of Barcelona's matches next season.

Arturo Vidal, 33, whose
contract expires in 2021, has succeeded in appearing with the team in 43 games this season, and Barcelona will be forced to dispense with him for free next summer.

Jordi Alba, 31,
has not been the left back at his best for some time and was one of the underperforming players against Bayern Munich.

He arrived at Camp Nou in the summer of 2012, and has been the first choice in his position since then, and has played 36 games this season, which prompted the club to extend his contract last year until 2024, with a penalty clause of half a billion euros.

Sergio Busquets (32 years)
is one of the main elements on the stadium, where he played 41 games this season, and his contract with Barcelona continues until 2023, and the value of the penalty clause is half a billion euros as well.

Ivan Rakitic, 32,
his contract expires next year, like Vidal, and his name has been linked to leaving Barcelona this summer, although he has played 42 games this season. The club is trying to find a new team for it this summer, but the midfielder prefers to choose his future himself.

This old guard is Barcelona's real crisis on the way to reform, as at least 5 of them are far from the level of Barcelona’s ambition, which is seeking European and local crowning, but the club is shackled by the extension of their contracts until at least next year, or looking for contracts for them or abandoning them for free. Which is impossible in light of the financial crisis hitting the world's clubs due to Corona.
