On Friday, the United States failed in its attempt to extend the United Nations embargo on arms revenues to Iran after Russia and China objected to this step, and Britain, France, Germany and eight other members abstained from voting in the UN Security Council, while Russia proposed holding a summit with America and the member states of the nuclear agreement. Iranian, to avoid escalation within the United Nations regarding Iran.

The US draft resolution - which was rejected after a vote within the Security Council - stipulated an indefinite extension of the arms embargo imposed on Iran, because it is scheduled to gradually ease the UN embargo on arms sales to Iran as of next October according to the council’s resolution. 2231 in which the 2015 Iran nuclear deal was adopted.

The United States and the Dominicans were the only two of the 15 council members to vote in favor of the draft resolution.

It was not expected that the US draft resolution would succeed in obtaining 9 votes in favor of its approval, thus negating the need for Russia and China to use the right of veto that they had waved, in light of the isolation that America has been experiencing within the Security Council with regard to Iran since Washington's withdrawal from Iran nuclear deal in May 2018.

The irony is that the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council #GCC sided with America against # Iran, knowing that # Russia and # China oppose the Trump administration's position to extend the arms embargo on Iran ..
But it was remarkable tonight that America's major allies, Britain, France and Germany, abstained from voting with America that only Dominican voted for! https://t.co/ayrvHF7eOc pic.twitter.com/7aupIE6XkY

US statements. US
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo condemned what he called the Security Council’s failure to reach a resolution to extend the arms embargo on Iran, and said that this reflects the Council’s failure to maintain international peace and security.

US National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien said in a television interview that the refusal of France, Germany and Britain to support the US efforts during a vote by the Security Council to extend the arms embargo on Iran is "disappointing, but not surprising." He added, "We lost today, but the matter is not over yet."

The US representative to the United Nations, Kelly Craft, said that her country would seek to implement the return mechanism for all sanctions on Iran in the coming days.

On the other hand, the Iranian representative to the United Nations, Majid Ravanchi, said that any return to international sanctions or restrictions on his country would be met with a strict response.

On the other hand, the Chinese representative to the United Nations, Zhang Jun said that the vote in the Security Council to reject the US project "shows once again that unilateral action will not be supported, and will be doomed to failure."

Putin's proposal
In a related context, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a video-calling summit in which his country, the United States and the member states of the Iran nuclear deal (Britain, France, China, Germany and Iran) would participate, with the aim of avoiding further clashes and escalation within the United Nations institutions regarding Iran.

"The issue is urgent," Putin said in a statement, "Otherwise, the alternative is more escalation of tension and a growing ban on conflict, which is a scenario that must be avoided."

Under the nuclear agreement, officially known as the "Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action", Iran has committed to reducing its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. In May 2018, US President Donald Trump announced his country's withdrawal from the agreement and imposing tough and escalating sanctions on Iran as part of the "maximum pressure" campaign. To force Tehran to conclude a new nuclear deal.
