US President Donald Trump visited a hospital in New York on Friday evening, to check on the health of his younger brother Robert, amid reports of his deteriorating health.

Trump admitted during a press conference he held before heading to the hospital in Manhattan that his brother was "going through a difficult period", expressing his hope for the recovery of 72-year-old Robert.

In his remarks, the president described Robert as an "excellent brother," adding: "We have had wonderful relations for a long time, since the first day."

Trump's visit to the hospital came just before the president headed to his private golf club in New Jersey, where he will spend the weekend.

The White House did not provide any details about the health problems of the president's brother, but officials confirmed to media that Robert was in a critical condition.

Robert Trump spent more than a week in the intensive care unit at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan last June.

The president's brother recently filed a lawsuit on behalf of the family of the master of the White House with the aim of preventing Mary Trump, daughter of President Fred Trump's older brother, from publishing her book in which she suggested that her uncle's character had been deviated by the complex family circumstances.
