• Australia: A shark tears off a tourist's leg

A man jumped on a great white shark and hit it to save his wife, when he attacked her on the beach of Port Macquarie, in the Australian state of New South Wales, according to the country's media reported this Saturday.

According to the 'Sydney Morning Herald', 35-year-old Chantelle Doyle was attacked by a ten-foot shark while surfing at Shelly Beach, sustaining serious injuries to her right leg. It was then that her husband, after realizing what was happening, jumped from his surfboard onto the shark to beat him incessantly until he managed to stop attacking his wife.

Once on the shore, the woman was cared for by bathers until emergency services arrived.

At present, the woman is stable and witnesses described what happened as a "heroic act".

The beaches of Port Macquarie have been closed after the incident. According to the BBC, this is the third serious shark attack on that stretch of coast in recent months.
