A spear thrower - Association Terre Mère

  • Known for its prehistoric cave, the village of Aurignac is hosting a round of the prehistoric weapons shooting championship (in Europe and even in the world) on August 15 and 16.
  • A half-learned, half-delusional competition, open to all.
  • To participate, your bows and spears must be 100% natural.

What are you doing this week-end ? Because if you want to put on your animal skin rug and give in to primary instincts, head for the village of Aurignac, famous for its authentic prehistoric shelter, one hour from Toulouse.

It is in front of the famous cave that the very serious “30th round of the European and world championship of prehistoric weapons shooting” will be organized. A fairly free competition since it is open to all * (and free of charge) but also very challenging: the world's best specialists in prehistoric archery or precision spear throwing with a thruster (a "handle" with a notch that increases tenfold. the power of the arm) meet in Aurignac. "They are enlightened amateurs passionate about ancestral techniques, scholars or seasoned archers," explains Sébastien Marzin, director of the Aurignacian Museum, co-organizer of the event with the Terre Mère association.

Plastic prohibited

But hey, don't be intimidated. Everyone will have their chance, as long as the weapons are legal, in other words entirely natural: wood and string for the bows, sticks and cut stones for the spears. “Plastic is prohibited,” warns Nicolas Marzin. Even if the organizers will be indulgent on the use of synthetic glues. Still, not everyone can master the making of the glue mixture of our ancestors in one day. Furthermore, for DIY warriors, the museum will sell its own primitive kits.

Targets up to 40 meters

No need to prepare for a barefoot half marathon either. The tests will consist in trying to reach, calmly and serenely, "a dozen targets placed at distances ranging from 8 to 40 meters".

And you don't go there to laugh, you will come out more resourceful and knowledgeable. The museum takes advantage of the championships to offer the must of its workshops, to cut flint or to make fires as in Koh-Lanta.

* Registration on site from 1 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday.
