The last Blockbuster on the planet is taking the nostalgic of video rentals a trip back in time with 90s-themed sleepovers. The chain's latest store, based in Oregon (US), has put an announcement on Airbnb to this effect.

The offer promises, for $ 4 a night, to transform the store into a living room "with sofa bed, ottomans and pillows to comfortably settle in with the novelties of the 1990s". Four places are available for three nights in September. “The store is yours for the night! », Specifies the announcement. "So let go, blow up the boom box and wear your favorite jeans from the 1990s."

A tourist place suffocated by the Covid-19 epidemic

This store, located in Bend, is the last bastion of a chain that had 9,000 outlets worldwide in the early 2000s. Blockbuster suffered a precipitous decline with the advent of streaming platforms like Netflix. The people of Bend have remained loyal to DVD and VHS rentals, through a vending machine that allows them to be returned a few days later.

The brand has also become a tourist destination. In recent years, a steady stream of fans have come to take selfies outdoors, shop for kitschy candy and admire movie memorabilia, like Russell Crowe's jacket in "Les Miserables." But with the coronavirus pandemic, the site has lost its "regular visits from friends, neighbors and tourists." The store promises total disinfection after every sleepover.
