12 August 2020With second quarter GDP data that marked a decline of 20.4% on the wave of lockdown measures to counter the coronavirus epidemic, the United Kingdom has officially entered recession. It is the strongest quarterly decline since the government began to collect these data systematically in 1955. 

According to the BBC reports on data from the national statistical office, this is the first recession since the financial crisis of 2008. In the first quarter GDP fell by 2.2%.
