An elderly Chinese man was set on fire from behind, but the case was not classified as a hate crime by the city police. In response to this, many elected officials in Brooklyn have spoken out, requesting law enforcement agencies to strictly investigate the case based on hate crimes and never allow such vicious cases to happen again.

  On August 10th, local time, New York City Councillor Mark Chui, State Representative Couton, State Senator Guonard and others, together with New York Pines and Cypress House Community Service Center, Brooklyn Chinese Association, Brooklyn Chinese Community Service Center, etc. The heads of the overseas Chinese delegation jointly held a press conference to condemn the 89-year-old Chinese man who was beaten and set on fire by a masked man, and requested that the case be included in a hate crime attack.

  The person in charge of the Songbaizhijia Community Service Center pointed out that behind the victim's assault and burn that day, he was afraid that his family was worried and did not call the police immediately. In the evening, after the family learned about it, they took the old man to the 62nd branch to report to the police the next day. The nature of the case is bad and it should be included as a hate crime. "We must not only ensure that this case is included in a hate crime, but also that similar cases in the future receive sufficient attention from law enforcement officials."

  On that day, elected officials demanded that this case be included in a hate crime investigation. Cui Mark pointed out that since the outbreak of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, the number of hate attacks against Chinese people has risen sharply, and the community must not tolerate such cases of evil nature.

  Coton said that setting a fire on an 89-year-old is not just an attack, but an attempted murder with a hate crime. Gonard also pointed out that the people should unite and say "no" to hatred.
