Another night of agitated demonstrations in Belarus, after the announcement of the disputed re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko. Police said a protester was injured by gunfire overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday.

"Aggressive" protesters armed with metal batons attacked police officers in Brest, in the south of the country, last night, according to a Belarusian police statement.

After warning shots "which did not stop" the attackers, the police "had to shoot with firearms" to "protect their lives", according to the same source. “An attacker was injured,” the statement said.

Protests against the re-election as president of authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko, in power for 26 years, have rocked Minsk, the capital, and several other cities in the country since Sunday evening.

Violently dispersed by police with stun grenades and rubber bullets, the protests resulted in thousands of arrests and left one dead and more than 250 injured, according to official figures.
