“We are, of course, monitoring the situation in Belarus. We are deeply concerned about the news that one protester was killed during the clashes, as well as reports of the detention of several thousand protesters, ”she said.

Throssell added that the UN has repeatedly called on the Belarusian authorities "to ensure full respect for the rights to freedom of speech, peaceful assembly and association."

According to her, any use of force by law enforcement agencies must comply with the principles of necessity and proportionality.

She also said that serious restrictions on access to the Internet in Belarus are of concern.

Earlier, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that European countries are preparing a common reaction to the events in Belarus.
