The 12 de Octubre hospital in Madrid has begun to suspend operations that involve hospital admission , as EL MUNDO has learned. The decision, which was already adopted by the Móstoles hospital at the end of July, is made due to the rebound in the coronavirus. For the moment, oncological interventions and those derived from emergencies are excluded from this postponement.

On October 12, one of the large hospitals in Madrid, a week ago, was the one that presented the most admissions of people positive for Covid-19 , according to data from the Ministry of Health, only surpassed precisely by the Mostoleño hospital. Last week, the management of October 12 already asked the heads of the health center service to take organizational measures to prepare for the eventuality of an increase in coronavirus cases.

According to the latest official data, this Tuesday there were 505 patients with Covid-19 hospitalized in the health centers of the Community of Madrid, of which 67 were being treated in the ICU. In the last 24 hours there have been 324 new positive cases and four people have died.

The Ministry of Health has confirmed to EL MUNDO that "with the increase in income, the elasticity plan has been launched" on October 12. "Some non-urgent operations have been rescheduled, in the afternoon, this week, which will be rescheduled with agility," they added. The department headed by Enrique Ruiz Escudero recalls that all the hospitals in the Community of Madrid have prepared this elasticity plan and that it will be applied based on the growth of Covid-19 cases.

In fact, other large hospitals in Madrid such as Ramón y Cajal, La Paz and Gregorio Marañón already indicated last week to this newspaper that they have prepared their own plans to adapt spaces and resources to a possible rebound in Covid-19 cases. . However, in all of them they pointed out that "for the moment" there are no notable data of significant increases in cases that require admission.

The Minister of Health, Enrique Ruiz Escudero, has maintained this Tuesday that the situation "is under control" at the moment at the healthcare level. In any case, in an interview in Onda Madrid, he has indicated that the number of hospitalization beds and Intensive Care Units, which as indicated in his department could double and triple respectively , will be "sized" according to the needs from the patients.

Precisely this past Monday, the management of the University Hospital of Móstoles decided to suspend all non-priority surgery in the center , where last weekend there were 37 patients hospitalized for Covid, three of them in the ICU, reports Efe.

The decision to cancel the operations considered non-urgent was taken in Móstoles at the end of July due to the high incidence of coronavirus cases in this area of the community. Móstoles is, after the capital, the population of the region most affected by the new cases of Covid-19.

In addition, the Mostoleño hospital has also decided to expand the spaces available for the hospitalization of patients with coronavirus. Specifically, a restricted access unit has been reserved in the Emergency Department , several rapid care posts for suspicious patients and a specific X-ray room for Covid-19 that will test continuously.
