The corresponding statement was published on the website of the EU Council.

Borrell said the EU "followed closely the developments leading up to the presidential elections."

The statement says that during the election campaign “the people of Belarus demonstrated a desire for democratic changes”.

“However, the elections were neither free nor fair,” the message says.

Borrell stated that "the authorities used disproportionate and unacceptable violence."

“We will assess the actions of the Belarusian authorities to resolve the current situation and carry out an in-depth review of relations between the EU and Belarus, which may also include taking measures against those responsible for the violence that we observe, for unjustified arrests and falsification of election results,” says in the statement.

Earlier, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry stated that “it is absolutely unacceptable how quickly a number of European officials made important ... political statements, even without trying to objectively understand and really assess the situation” in Belarus.
