When the fruit has been handed in, it is mixed in Sysav's pre-treatment plant with other collected food waste and then transformed into a so-called slurry. The slurry is then sent to a biogas plant where it is digested and turned into biogas and biofertilizer.

Biogas is a fossil-free alternative to petrol and diesel and biofertilizer is significantly climate-smarter than commercial fertilizer.

Climate-smart recycling

The fall fruit collection at Skåne's recycling centers takes place until 4 October.

During the rest of the time, when the special containers are not in place, the fallen fruit can be left as garden waste and then become green compost instead.

Biogas and biofertilizer

Biogas is a clean and renewable fuel and thus an important complement to petrol and diesel.

To a large extent, biogas consists of the energy-rich gas methane. As it is extracted from biological material, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere does not increase.

Biofertilizers from food waste have a high nutritional value and many of the substances the crops need. By fertilizing with biofertilizer, you can return nutrients and humus that would otherwise have been wasted to the cycle.

By using biofertilizer, the need for commercial fertilizer consisting of phosphorus, which is a finite resource, is reduced.
