11 August 2020 The number of people infected with the coronavirus worldwide has just exceeded 20 million: these are the results of an independent count by Johns Hopkins University (USA), which also reports 733,897 deaths to date. In particular, the confirmed cases are now 20,001,019. The country with the highest number of infections is the United States with 5,085,821 (25.4% of the total), followed by Brazil with 3,057,470 (15.2%), India with 2,215,074 (11%) ), from Russia with 890,799 (4.4%) and from South Africa with 563,598 (2.8%). In the top 10, there are Mexico (480,278), Peru (478,024), Colombia (387,481), Chile (375,044) and Iran (328,844). The first 5 million cases worldwide were reported on 21 May, 10 million were reached on 28 June, while 15 million were exceeded on 22 July, a trend that confirms the acceleration of the pandemic.     

In terms of deaths, 733,897 in total, the United States also leads with 163,370, followed by Brazil with 101,752, Mexico with 52,298, the United Kingdom with 46,611 and India with 44,386. Italy (35,209), France (30,327), Spain (28,576), Peru (21,072) and Iran (18,616) complete the top ten.

Japan, after 13 days returns under a thousand infections
The Japanese Ministry of Health has detected 842 new cases of Covid-19 in 24 hours. For the first time in 13 days, the number of infections reported in one day dropped below a thousand. Positive signs have also emerged in Tokyo, where many of the new cases have been recorded. The Japanese capital has registered 196 infections, and in two weeks it is the first time that the daily count has fallen below 200 cases. Five coronavirus-related deaths have been reported across the country. To date, 49,630 cases of the virus have been identified in Japan and at least 1,065 people have died.

In China 44 new cases
The Chinese National Health Commission reported 44 new cases of Covid 19, of which 31 from abroad and 13 locally, five fewer than the previous day. The 13 local cases were recorded in the northwestern province of Xinjiang, where an outbreak was detected more than three weeks ago. Conversely, travelers from abroad were diagnosed as positive in the provinces of Shaanxi (north-west, 9), Shanghai (east, 8), Shandong (east, 6), Canton (south, 3), Gansu (west, 2), Hebei (north, 1), Heilongjiang (north-east, 1) and Zhejiang (east, 1). Health authorities have also specified that 52 patients, bringing the total number of active infections in mainland China to 794, of which 44 remain in serious condition. The National Health Commission has not announced new deaths from Covid-19, so the figure has remained at 4,634, among the 84,712 officially diagnosed infected in China since the beginning of the pandemic. As for infected people who are asymptomatic, China has registered 17 new cases and the total number of people in such circumstances under observation is 285.
