In China, a recent incident in a small town is causing ripples.

The start of the incident was a traffic accident. On August 4th, around 5 am, a freight truck passing through Yancheng City in Jiangsu Province in eastern China was collided on a highway. The truck was carrying 10 tons of frozen pork from Shanghai to Shandong Province. In an accident, pork from a truck fell on the highway and under the overpass.

Afterwards, villagers near the overpass began to gather. At first, it is said that no one picked up the fallen pork. But when one resident took it, the truck driver at the scene said that the other residents took it. Even bicycles and motorcycles were mobilized, and the driver shouted out that it was a predatory act and not taken, but it was said to be useless. The driver said that he couldn't go down the overpass, so he had no choice but to watch the residents take it.

When I checked later, of the 400 boxes and 10 tons of frozen pork in the truck, 267 boxes and 7 tons were lost. 300,000 yuan, equivalent to 51 million won in our money. The driver eventually reported it to the police, and five days after the accident, the police said they had recovered some of the seven tons. It was not disclosed how much was recovered. One villager said, "It's been a few days, so some residents may have already eaten pork."

The reaction of Chinese netizens to this incident varies. There are many comments criticizing the behavior of the residents, such as "Pillaging rather than helping", but there are also comments saying, "It is possible for people's psychology," and "What the first person does is important."

● China Pork prices in July rose 85.7% year-on-year

This event does not seem to be related to the recent surge in pork prices in China. According to a report by Xinhua News Agency on the 9th, the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs conducted a survey of pork prices in 500 trials across China, and the price of pork was 45.98 yuan (7,816 won) per kg at the end of May and 55.50 at the end of July. It rose to yuan (9,435 won). That's more than 20% in two months.

Compared to last year, pork prices have risen even more. According to the release of China's National Bureau of Statistics on the 10th, in July this year, consumer prices in China rose 2.7% year-on-year, of which pork rose a whopping 85.7% year-on-year. Chinese media analyzes that the supply of pork decreased due to the recent flood damage that swept the Yangtze River basin in the southern region, and pork consumption decreased due to the spread of Corona 19, and pork consumption increased again due to the recent corona 19 complaint.

● China consumes 49.3% of world pork consumption The

Chinese love of pork is well known. 62.7% of the meat eaten by the Chinese is pork. As of 2018, 49.3% of global pork consumption was consumed in China. Although 47.8% of the world's production is produced in China, the consumption is so high that China is a net importer of pork from other countries. China's pork imports account for 20% of global trade.

The Chinese authorities predict that "pork supply will improve in the second half of the year," and "the possibility of a large price increase is not high." Water damage is also increasing in Korea. I am concerned that the pork wave will spread ahead of Chuseok.
