The Lebanese President accepts the resignation of the government

Lebanese President Michel Aoun announced the acceptance of the resignation of the government, and asked it to continue conducting business until the new government is formed, according to a statement carried by Lebanese television.

On Monday, Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab announced the resignation of his government, saying that the powerful explosion that shook the capital and fueled the feelings of anger among citizens was a result of "rampant corruption."

The explosion of 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate in a warehouse in Beirut port on August 4 killed at least 163 people, injured more than six thousand, and destroyed sectors of the coastal city, which exacerbated the political and economic collapse the country witnessed in the previous months.

In a televised speech, Diab said that he supports the Lebanese’s calls for those responsible for "this disaster" to be held accountable.

Diab made the announcement after a cabinet meeting, with many ministers wanting to resign, according to ministerial and political sources.
