On Thursday 6 August, SVT Nyheter published a secretly filmed video - taken by the animal rights organization Djurrättsalliansen. The video shows how hens are squeezed to death and beaten with sticks at Sweden's largest egg producer - CA Cedergren in Mönsterås.

- It looks absolutely awful. From what you see from the film, it is obviously animal cruelty it is about, says prosecutor Kjell Jannesson.

But Kjell Jannesson emphasizes that the investigation must find out if the act occurred at CA Cedergren - and above all - who is actually carrying out the act.

- We have to find out who has done this and if this has actually happened in this place, he says.

Crimes are downgraded

Police resources are needed to investigate this. But there is something that is not certain that the police will be able to help with - they prioritize investigations concerning serious crime.

- These are cases that are not prioritized by the police. As a prosecutor, I can do nothing but ask the police to do "this and that". It is the police who have the ball now, says Kjell Jannesson.

May take a year to clear up

Kjell Jannesson has been a prosecutor in a number of cases involving animal cruelty. Some of the cases are more serious than the chicken torture that SVT revealed, according to Kjell Jannesson himself.

- Even though the film looks grotesque, this is not the most serious case I have handled. I have a number of suspected animal cruelties worse than this which has been with the police for a year, he says.

Kjell Jannesson does not rule out that this case will also take over a year to resolve.

- In the worst case, it can be so. This can take a long time to clear up, he says.
