Emmanuel Macron denounced Sunday evening "the deadly attack which cowardly hit a group of humanitarian workers" in Niger and affirmed that "all means" will be implemented to "elucidate" the circumstances of this "attack". Six French and two Nigerians were part of this group, according to Niger. 

A defense council will be held Tuesday morning "under the authority of the President of the Republic and on the basis of information which will be transmitted by the Nigerien and French authorities", indicated the Elysee. After the attack, Emmanuel Macron, who spoke with his Nigerian counterpart Mahamadou Issoufou, expressed “his condolences and the support of the French nation to the families and relatives of the victims”. The French and Nigerien presidents wished to recall "that all means are and will be implemented to elucidate the circumstances of this murderous attack in the coming hours", according to the press release. 

An “intact” will against terrorism

"I condemn the terrorist attack, cowardly and barbaric perpetrated this Sunday in the peaceful town of Kouré", tweeted for his part President Issoufou, who sent his condolences "to the families of the Nigerien and French victims" as well as "to the President Macron whose commitment to our side in the fight against terrorism is unwavering ”.

The statement did not confirm the number of French people killed in the attack, which left eight dead. According to Nigerien sources, six French and two Nigeriens were shot dead. The NGO Acted indicated in the evening that "several employees" had been killed. The attack took place in the Kouré region about fifty kilometers from Niamey, according to the Elysee.

Presidents Macron and Issoufou last met at the G5 Sahel summit held on June 30 in Nouakchott to reaffirm the determination of the Sahel countries and their allies to continue the fight against jihadist groups active in the Sahel. , particularly in the “three borders” area between Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. Sunday, Emmanuel Macron assured that "their determination to continue the common fight against terrorist groups in the Sahel" remained "intact".
