The Chinese village of Suji Xincun has been isolated after a fatal case of bubonic plague was recorded there. The death was reported to health authorities on August 2 and was officially attributed to the plague four days later.

None of the other residents of the town has so far tested positive. Daily disinfection measures for homes have been put in place, said a press release from the Baotou municipal health commission, relayed by CNN.

Second case in two years

The district of Damao Banner, of which the village belongs, was placed until the end of 2020 at level three of the plague prevention system. The goal is to prevent an epidemic. The authorities placed nine people who had been in contact with the patient in quarantine, as well as 26 other inhabitants identified as secondary contacts.

The patient died of cardiovascular failure. This is the second case of bubonic plague confirmed since early 2019 in China. The first had not turned out to be fatal. Bubonic plague is manifested by painful swelling of the lymphatic system, cough, and fever. Despite the effectiveness of antibiotics, the plague has not been eradicated. Between 1,000 and 2,000 cases are diagnosed each year worldwide, according to the WHO.
