A lightning strike caused an abrupt stop with an immediate restart of the Lourdes funicular. 12 of the 27 occupants of a cabin were injured, two of whom are in "relative emergencies".

Twelve people were slightly injured on Monday, two of whom were taken to hospital, after a cabin of the funicular in Lourdes, in the Hautes-Pyrenees, suddenly came to a halt following a consecutive power cut to a violent thunderstorm, we learned from the firefighters.

Two fifties in "relative emergencies"

"There was a power cut after a lightning strike causing the funicular to stop. The cabin which was coming down with 27 occupants had a sudden stop with an immediate restart. Of the 27 people, 15 were unharmed, including a baby of three months, 12 slightly injured including two evacuated to the hospital in Lourdes ", the same source added. Lightning did not fall on the funicular. The two slightly more seriously injured people - a 56-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman - constitute "relative emergencies" and their prognosis is not committed. The funicular connects the city of Lourdes, the most important Catholic pilgrimage site in France, to the Pic du Jer (951 meters) over a length of just over a kilometer.
