Xinhua News Agency, Taipei, August 9th (Reporters Wu Jihai and Fu Shuangqi) The internal affairs department of the Taiwan authorities released the latest statistics showing that the average life expectancy of Taiwanese people in 2019 was 80.9 years, of which 77.7 years old for men and 84.2 years old for women, both hitting historical highs.

In terms of long-term trends, with the improvement of medical standards, the importance of food safety, the improvement of quality of life, and the prevalence of exercise, the average life expectancy of Taiwanese people has shown a long-term upward trend, from 79.0 years in 2009 to 80.9 years in 2019.

From the observation of the average life expectancy of various counties and cities in Taiwan, Taipei City is the highest at 83.9 years old, and Taitung County is the lowest at 76.3 years old. Generally speaking, the average life expectancy of eastern counties and cities is lower than that of western counties and cities. Taiwan’s internal affairs department said that the reasons may be related to factors such as convenient transportation in the west, relatively sufficient medical resources, and differences in humanities and habits. In 2019, the average life expectancy of Taitung County increased by 0.53 years, the highest increase among all counties and cities, showing that the gap between Taitung County and each county is gradually narrowing.
